Arboretum Trsteno doubles up as the beautiful gardens of King’s landing and is one of the major filming locations of the Game of Thrones TV show. These are the gardens where main protagonists weave their plots and exchange secrets at King's Landing.
Trsteno is a small settlement which is located only 24 kilometres (15 miles) north-west of Dubrovnik. It is easy to get there in some 20 minutes by one of the regular busses connecting Dubrovnik with the Dubrovnik coastland. This settlement hosts one of the oldest and most beautiful Arboretums in the whole region.
The Trsteno Arboretum covers an area of 25 hectares. It was established near the end of the fifteenth century as a park and summer residence of the patrician family Gučetić-Gozze. A renaissance summer residence with the encompassing garden, aqueduct, mill, the beautiful fountain with the Sea-God Neptune and nymphs, the belvedere pavilion overlooking the sea and the Elaphite islands is the finest example of Gothic-Renaissance Dubrovnik summer residences with a developed garden architecture.
The pride of the arboretum, two Oriental Planes located on the central market place of Trsteno. They are over 500 years old and are unique specimens of its kind in Europe. The ancient trees are both about 45/60 m tall and their trunks are 5 m in diameter. The Arboretum collection of exotic and decorative trees and shrubs includes over 300 species.
